Jeanne Bussard Center, Inc. A Legacy |
Fran and C. Lease Bussard were able to share their only child's life for 21 years. Those years were ones of ill health, emotional and physical disability for young Jeanne Bussard. Meningitis took her hearing as an infant. Severe asthma later forced the removal of her larynx. Emotional problems made life still more difficult.
Yet Jeanne never stopped loving, laughing, and learning. At the Rhinehart School for the Deaf she acquired lip reading and oral communication skills. Her artistic abilities and sense of humor flourished and she became fluent in sign language while at the Maryland school for the Deaf. Then in 1957 a virus ended her short life.
Jeanne Bussard persevered in the face of growing adversity. In the hope that others will receive the encouragement and opportunities to do the same, her parents established the Jeanne Bussard Center in her memory.
Since 1965, the Jeanne Bussard Center has served residents of Frederick County. The Center is a private, non-profit agency certified by the State of Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services and the State of Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration.
